Rock The Road Itinerary
Wed, June 8- Depart for Dublin, Ireland
Depart for Ireland on an overnight flight. If you have questions, or need help with your air travel, call Anne at 201-370-2443.
Thur, June 9 - Dublin Arrival & Blarney Castle
When you arrive in Dublin, our wonderful driver and I will be there to welcome you. We’ll stop nearby for your first, full Irish breakfast, before driving south to Blarney Castle. Stroll the beautiful castle grounds, and climb the battlements of this 15th century fortress to kiss the famous Blarney Stone, which is said to bestow the gift of eloquence. I kissed it as a young lad, so you know it works! From Blarney, we’ll continue through rugged countryside to Killarney where we’ll have time to relax, before a welcome dinner in the hotel restaurant.
Fri, June 10 - Ring of Kerry & Killarney
This morning, feast your eyes on scenic Aghadoe Heights, before we set off to see part of the breathtaking Ring of Kerry. The picturesque drive will take us through the village of Kenmare, before reaching Moll's Gap, which overlooks the famous Lakes of Killarney. Then on to Ladies' View for an even more spectacular view of lakes and mountains. We’ll stop at Brendan Ferris’ farm for a fascinating opportunity to learn about sheepdogs, and watch them herding sheep. This afternoon is free for you to explore and shop and dine at your leisure. Tonight, a full band will join me in Rocking the Road for a great night of music in a local pub.
Sat, June 11 - Dingle Peninsula
Today, I will take you to the Dingle Peninsula, described by National Geographic as “the most beautiful place on earth.” It is truly spectacular, with its heathery mountains, ancient stone walls, sandy beaches and rocky headlands. We’ll go all the way to Slea Head, at the western tip of the peninsula, where you will experience jaw-dropping views of mountains and coastline. Then on to Gallarus Oratory, which was built in the 6th century of unmortared stone, and remains watertight after 14 centuries! Next, travel to Ballyferriter with my first cousins Donnacha & Seamus (yes, another Seamus Kelleher!). They are both local historians and storytellers, so you are in for a treat! We will visit Kilmalkedar Church, which is said to be fashioned after Cormac's Chapel, and then on to Dingle village, where you’ll have time to stroll and shop and explore. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants, serving excellent food. This evening, we’ll meet up for an epic music session at Nelligan’s Bar, where I will be joined by some of the finest local musicians. It will be a night to remember!
Sun, June 12 - Cliffs of Moher & Galway
Leaving Killarney, we take a short ferry ride across the River Shannon Estuary. A drive along the coast of County Clare will bring us to the Cliffs of Moher, one of Ireland’s most beloved, natural landmarks at 700 feet high and 5 miles long. Truly stunning! And then it’s off to Galway, the City of the Tribes, and my hometown! (I may break out into song when we arrive!) I truly love this place, and you’ll see why as we start with a short panoramic tour to show you the Spanish Arch, the Claddagh and the Cathedral, before checking into our hotel. After dinner in our hotel, enjoy the sights and sounds of this gem of a city.
Mon, June 13 – My Home Town!
This morning, my good friend, local historian and raconteur Brian Nolan, will take us on a very special walking tour of Galway. He will regale you with stories and show you what most tourists never see, in a way that even most locals never see it! You’ll see the house where I was born, and a few of the venues where I honed my craft, before coming to America. We’ll have to pay homage with a Guinness or two! This afternoon, you are free to ramble and shop. Tonight, join me and a full band for a performance at the legendary Quay’s Bar, right in the heart of the city.
Tue, June 14 – Enchanting Connemara
Today, my lifelong friend and award winning author, musician and storyteller, Gerry Hanberry will spend the day with us sharing songs and stories of his beloved homeland. We’ll drive through Connemara’s boglands and mountains where sheep graze freely. We’ll travel via Sky Road, before stopping for lunch at Foyles Hotel. At Mullarkey’s Bar, Gerry and I will entertain with a lively music session. You’ll have free time in the village of Clifden, before heading back to Galway.
Wed, June 15 - Dublin
This morning, we’ll travel cross-country to Dublin, Ireland’s capital. A local guide will take us on tour of the city, which was founded by the Vikings in the 10th century. Tonight, on our last night in Ireland, you are in for a treat, as I host a farewell dinner, followed by a lively show of traditional Irish music and dance.
Thu, June 16 - Return to the United States
With memories to last a lifetime, we’ll set off for Dublin Airport and our journey home. So long Ireland – we truly Rocked the Road!
